MITRE BlueTech Lab Exterior
Located in Bedford, MA, MITRE’s BlueTech Lab is a national resource for undersea testing, innovation, and collaboration.
MITRE BlueTech Lab Interior
MITRE’s BlueTech Lab test tank is the longest and one of the largest tanks in the region (106’ x 40’ x 19.7’) which enables testing of communication and acoustic sensing systems at lower transmission frequencies and longer signal lengths than other facilities.
Mobile Platform
There is a surface-level mobile platform with rotary stage above the test tank allowing for precise deployment and observation of technology.
Garage
The BlueTech Lab is outfitted with a large garage door, allowing trucks to back into the facility for the transfer of heavy platforms into the test tank.
Gantry Crane
The lab is also equipped with a two-ton (4409lb) overhead gantry crane.
Here, NOAA Fisheries tested their 1.13 ton (2500lb) HabCam to calibrate new cameras which will be used to help count scallop populations.
Motion Capture
Twenty underwater motion capture cameras are located along the perimeter of the tank for precise optical tracking of underwater objects.
Underwater Cameras
The BlueTech test tank is outfitted with eight underwater video cameras.
MATE ROV
In January 2024, MITRE partnered with MATE ROV and the Marine Technology Society to train more than 20 teachers from local Massachusetts high schools on how to participate in the MATE ROV competition.
MassRobotics
In summer 2023, MITRE partnered with MassRobotics to host a BlueTech Maritime Academy for Massachusetts high school students where they learned how to build a small remotely operated vehicle.
MITRE BlueTech Lab Groundbreaking
In 2021, MITRE broke ground on the new BlueTech Lab facility, commemorating the event with special guests including Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congressman Seth Moulton, and Congressman Jake Achincloss among other state and federal leaders.
Before the BlueTech Lab
Prior to breaking ground on the BlueTech Lab, MITRE used the existing tank for various in water testing of maritime technologies.
Original Cooling Bay
MITRE’s BlueTech Lab was built around a large, in-ground tank that was originally used to efficiently cool the buildings in the 90s.
